From Vision to Reality: L&O’s Journey in the Kai Tak Sports Park Project
On 1st March 2025, Kai Tak Sports Park celebrated its grand opening. This signifies the completion of Hong Kong’s largest sports and entertainment infrastructure from vision to reality.
This world-class sports venue, qualified up to international standard, comprises a 50,000-seat Main Stadium, with an air-conditioning environment under a retractable roof, a 10,000-seat Sports Arena, a 5,000-seat Youth Sports Ground, retail and catering facilities including a dining cove facing Victoria Harbour, plus gardens and courts for a diverse array of outdoor activities. The total floor area of the 28 hectare development is around 432,000m², procured through a Build-Design-Operate contract awarded at HK$29.9 billion.
Leigh & Orange’s journey along this landmark project begins in 1998 as a pro bono exercise assisting the local sports community in a search for the best location for Hong Kong’s next-generation sports stadium. This is followed by a Technical Feasibility Study in 2007. Today, as the Supervising Officer’s Representative and Technical Services Consultant for the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau (CSTB) of the Hong Kong SAR government, Leigh & Orange is honoured to have led a team of the multi-discipline specialist consultants from Hong Kong, Australia, Germany and Malaysia through both the pre-contract and post-contract stages.
Starting with an initial advice to CSTB on the development of the Employer’s Requirements, our services encompass also a reference design, skilfully formulated to meet the urban planning, architectural, engineering and operation considerations. After that, there are also technical supports on tendering, contract administration, cost monitoring and site supervision services. Throughout the process, countless challenges are overcome with professional and innovative solutions, ensuring the successful delivery of this landmark project and firmly turning this vision into life with the project team.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to everyone involved in this landmark project! With such diverse offerings, Kai Tak Sports Park is poised to elevate international performances, sports events, and culture and community engagement to new heights in Hong Kong.
