Jolly Place

Tseung Kwan O, Hong Kong

A need was identified to provide comfortable homes for senior citizens who are socially and economically independent. This pilot project for Hong Kong Housing Society’s Senior Citizens Residences Scheme comprises a 27-storey tower containing 243 residential flats for senior citizens with integrated care and recreational facilities in a 5-storey podium with the upper level designed for outdoor leisure activities on an urban site. The podium garden includes a foot massage pebble path and fitness equipment. The building’s exterior reflects the colourful surroundings and blends in with the residential neighbourhood. The interior is user-friendly and provides a barrier-free design to accommodate disabled users. Thoughtful design considerations were incorporated into many senior-care features to enhance the environment and achieving sustainability, durability, operational and functional efficiency. Taking a radical departure from traditional skilled nursing homes and assisted living facilities, Jolly Place presents a quality lifestyle for senior citizens. The project was awarded a 2004 Quality Building Award in the residential category.
