KingMed Medical Research Campus
Guangzhou, ChinaThe project is situated in Dinghu District, Zhaoqing, covering a site area of 125,000sqm with a total Gross Floor Area of 217,200sqm. The vision for the campus is to establish it as the Southern R&D Centre for KingMed Diagnostics, significantly upgrading research capabilities and expanding service networks across China. This campus will solidify KingMed’s position as a global leader by housing a first-class medical and biotechnology research institution, as well as a new Biobank for storing extensive bio-samples of rare diseases. It aims to attract experts and academics from around the world to engage in scientific research.
Nestled at the foot of Lingyang Mountain and adjacent to the Xijiang River, the site offers stunning views of both the mountain and the river, creating an ideal environment for future researchers to live and work. The design seeks to foster a dialogue between architecture and landscape. To address noise from the light rail to the north and water plant rooms to the south, as well as visual disturbances from surrounding high-rise residential buildings, the architectural planning organizes the research buildings around a “big park” concept. This urban oasis, featuring expansive landscapes, will provide a tranquil setting for collaboration and innovation, enhancing the visual appeal for laboratories, offices, and residential spaces.
The main building to the north serves as a key architectural statement, elevating the city’s image with its impressive façade while mitigating traffic noise from the light rail. Given that the Biobank and associated laboratories require a larger footprint, the façade is articulated to break down the overall massing. The landscape concept of “green belt,” incorporating both active and passive greenery, reconnects the campus with the surrounding mountain and river landscapes.
